Which AI model is the best?

There is no single best AI model. One leads in coding, another in reasoning, a third in price or speed, and the lead often changes. Every day, Newstake reads the latest benchmark results and model announcements and sums them up on this page, with a link to each one.

There is no single best AI model; it depends on the task. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Terra pushes the cost-efficiency frontier, priced at half or less per token than GPT-5.6 Terra, with reported gains in coding and terminal evaluations and lower hallucination rates.

Mistral says its open-weight Mistral Large 4 improves coding, defensive cybersecurity and reasoning efficiency. Kimi says Kimi K3.1 Pro is an open-weight model with a 1-million-token context window and a faster Highspeed version.

GitHub reports its Copilot Fusion scores 2 points below Opus 5.5 in Claude Code on the Coding Agent Index at half the cost per task. Artificial Analysis launched Intelligence Index v5, shifting 60% of its composite to private test sets, and GDPx measures frontier models in realistic, high-value domains.

Lab claims about their own models are claims, not independent results.

Best for what?

Start with your task. A model that writes great code can be slow or expensive for a quick question. A cheap, fast model can be the right choice for summaries or translations.

Think about what matters most to you: quality, speed, price, privacy, or how well it works in your language.

How to read a benchmark

A benchmark is a fixed test that many models take, so their scores can be compared. Each test measures one kind of skill, such as math, coding or following instructions.

  • Check who ran the test. A lab’s scores for its own model are a claim. Results from an independent group, such as Artificial Analysis, are easier to compare.
  • Check what the test measures, and whether that is close to your task.
  • Small differences in score often do not matter in daily use.
  • Leaderboards built from people’s votes, such as LMArena, show which answers people prefer. That is useful, but it is not the same as being correct.

Try it yourself

The best test is your own work. Give two or three top models the same real task and compare the answers. Many assistants let you switch models in a menu.
