Can I buy OpenAI shares?

Not on a stock exchange. OpenAI is private, and its shares are sold only to selected investors. Most people cannot buy them directly. Microsoft owns a large stake in OpenAI and is listed, but Microsoft’s share price depends mostly on its own business.

Before you invest
  1. Listed?

Is the company on an exchange?

  2. Allowed?

Can you legally buy private shares?

  3. Real?

Is the seller who they say they are?

Why you cannot buy them on an exchange

OpenAI started in 2015 as a non-profit lab. Its shares do not trade on an exchange, and it raises money from private investors instead.

If OpenAI plans to list its shares, it will have to file public documents first. Newstake will show its announcements when that happens.

Other ways people try

There are a few indirect routes, and each has limits:

  • Private share sales. Some platforms sell shares of private companies, but in the United States usually only to accredited investors with high income or wealth.
  • Funds. Some venture or tech funds hold private shares. Check what a fund actually owns before you buy.
  • Listed companies such as Microsoft own stakes, but OpenAI is a small part of what they are worth.

Be careful with offers

Private shares are hard to sell again, their price is hard to check, and scams that offer “pre-IPO” shares are common. This guide is general information, not financial advice.
