How can I use SEC filings to understand company news?
Find the company in EDGAR, choose the relevant filing and read the section behind the news. Newstake’s SEC filter helps you discover selected filings from tracked companies.
- 10-K
Annual report.
- 10-Q
Quarterly report.
- 8-K
Specified current events and related exhibits.
Start with the right company
Similar names can lead to the wrong filing. Check the company name and CIK, the SEC’s company identifier. Keep the filing link with your notes.
Choose the document you need
A 10-K is an annual report; a 10-Q is quarterly. An 8-K reports specified current events and can attach a release or agreement. Foreign issuers use other forms, including 20-F and 6-K.
For an earnings story, check the period and units. For a deal, read the conditions and expected closing date. A filing date may differ from the date of the event.
Separate results from forecasts
A reported result and management’s hopes for next year are different things. Read the surrounding explanation before copying a number.
Newstake is not a complete EDGAR mirror. Use the original filing for exhibits and the SEC archive for full history. Filing with the SEC does not mean the SEC endorses a company’s claims.
